Ok, I want to start mining and get about 500khash/s What is an average Hash per second for an averg=age miner?  I keep seeing people saying: 'Yay! I am getting my 500Mhash/s miner tomorrow' but in other places that seems low.  Then I see these 5GHash/s miners from BFL.  What is an average hash rate for a miner? Thank You!

Also, look here please! I want to start mining but have no idea where to start. (No 'You wont make money comments)  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=204439.0

Hey man. Welcome!

You have to take note of the units of speed.
A Kh/s is anything up to 1,000 hashes per second.
A Gh/s is anything up to 10,000 hashes per second
and a Mh/s is anything up to 100,000 hashes per second.

So you have a 500 kh/s card. Whereas those miners you're refering to are 5 GIGAhashes (the second one) [5,000 kh/s] per second.

Here's a mining calculator so you can figure out how many coins you'd be making with 500 Kh/s.

This one is for litecoins:

Most miners talking about KHash/s are talking about Litecoin mining, while those talking about MHash/s are talking about Bitcoin mining.

The hash algorithm for LTC (scrypt) is about 1,000 times slower than the algorithm for BTC (SHA-256), which explains the speed difference.

There is no average rate. Different people mine a different speeds.

No, not really.

1 K = 1,000
1 M = 1,000 K = 1,000,000
1 G = 1,000 M = 1,000,000,000
