Netherlands mint scannable coins

Dutch Royal Mint has made what appears to be world’s first coin to feature the Quick Response (QR) Code, a matrix of black and white squares, which can be scanned by a mobile phone camera and recognized by an app.

Sounds like it's mainly so coin values can be processed by machines (vending machines, etc) regardless of what the coin metal content or size is.  So the mint can even make plastic coins in the future for example.  That's my guess anyway...
