How blokchain based companies make money ?

Hi,

I'm new into cryptoworld. Recently, I've made some research on Steemit and i'm still wondering how they make money ? What is their business model ?

I mean, more generally, how a blockchain based company can make profits if everything is decentralized, if its service is free to use and if it doesn't own user data to sell to third parts (like Facebook do, for example) ?

Does their value come from tokens they keep during the ICO ?

I need to understand.
