is the term "altcoin" becoming obsolete?

maybe this was appropriate when there was bitcoin and a few alts but at this point it seems like a silly distinction to make that is not helpful to the industry as a whole.

having one forum just for bitcoin and then another forum for all other coins is ridiculous

I think the term still applies.  People use it to differentiate Bitcoin from everything else.  When speaking about the all coins crypto or cryptocurrency is used.  I don't think it takes away from any coins.

It is the Father who have the name. He have too many kids to name them all.
It is just to differ bitcoin with others. Can we say it could be respect for bitcoin which is the oldest one and where we got the idea of a crypto currency.
Though I think many alternate coins are pretty good when it comes to focusing in one service.

Don't be hurt but that's the reality and it's continuous that bitcoin is origin of these coins and it's the main crypto currency.

So alternative coin = alt coin still does apply.

We are generalizing other projects / token / coins as alt coins because there are so many in the economy.

Yes and No because people will always need a quick way to explain it is different to Bitcoin

the reality is that bitcoin is the "coin" that everyone knows. that is why others will always remain "alt"coins.

if you go in the streets and ask people if they have heard of altcoins they will answer No. or if they say Yes, and then ask them how they will tell you that they heard about bitcoin first and then found out that there are these "alternative" cryptocurrencies called altcoins in existence.

and this will remain like this as long as there is no usage in the real world for altcoins. when you entered a shop and saw the "XXXcoin is accepted here" alongside "Bitcoin Is Accepted here" sign, that is the day you can say XXX is no longer an altcoin and is a real cryptocurrency deserving to be stand alone.
so far i have only seen LTC rarely along bitcoin.

There is some sense to what you are saying because we are referring to so many coins when we talk of altcoins. But that is the truth actually and better to be clear with that. Bitcoin is the only thing here and the rest are considered followers. Blockchain is the invention of Satoshi who is also the inventor of Bitcoin. The rest that used blockchain are only followers.
