When a thread gets locked is there a way to find out why it was locked?

No. But usually, if the post was locked by a moderator, he may disclosure the reason before locking the thread.

If you want to know reason why thread was locked, you have to contact moderator, who is responsible for that board where thread was posted.
Usually, threads get locked when question of OP is already answered.
Also, mods often lock threads which already got many replies. In such threads users just posting same replies, just in other words. When mods see that users aren't adding anything new to thread, they just lock it.
