Hi all,

I'm a complete newbie to this and decided today to have some fun and buy a small amount of bitcoin.

I got my wallet at blockchain.info.  Then I assumed I had to register with a broker.  So I tried registering with bittylicious.  I uploaded some documents but they were rejected (poor quality).

Out of interest I tried the option available on the blockchain.info site, called coinify.  This let me buy bitcoin with no verification at all (I just had to supply my bank card details).

Why is this?  Why do I have to prove my identity with third party brokers, yet was able to buy bitcoin with no verification on the blockchain site?

Very curious..

It is called KYC (Know Your Customers) and AML (Anti Money Laundering) procedures and any bank has the same.

Reading this you will know why it makes sense. Otherwise, any criminal could make his money clean for the banking system.
Coinify does verifications checks in some cases.

Thanks for your reply, LeGaulois.

Yes I understand why the verification takes place, but what I don't understand is why coinify (which I accessed from within the blockchain.info site) didn't verify.

OP is not asking why he needs to upload documents to verify his ID.

If you read his post, he is asking why he did NOT need to do this to buy Bitcoin on blockchain.info, and I actually could not tell you because I have no idea.

Thank you NewBet.  Yes, just to clarify, the documents I uploaded to Bittylicious were poor quality scans I'd taken with my phone.  Rather than go through the aggravation of getting better scans, I thought I'd see what happened if I tried the Coinify option available on the Blockchain site, and to my surprise I was able to purchase without verification. I'm just wondering why.

On a side note, I thought the Bittylicious site looks so amateur.  I know it's legit because I've read about it from legitimate sources, but if I had just stumbled upon it I'd never have tried it - it looks like something from 2003.

Blockchain.info redirect you to Coinify or it is something integrated within the site? If you are not redirected to the site then it is normal Blockchain.info is using Coinify not their own system, hence the responsibility of the verification goes to Coinify. That's why I was saying Coinify does verifications checks in some cases, I supposed he was aware of it. Also I guess you used a card and not a bank account...

Yeah, we're working on that! We've spent the last few years getting a site that actually works well, with nice features and is stable. Now, we have a bit of time to actually focus on the webdesign so this should change soon.
