So I signed up with mtgox, did the account verification (drivers license, proof of residency) waited 3 days to get that...

Then I tried to wire them money from bank of america but I get this error:

Error Message
We were unable to process your request.
According to our records, this account was previously suspended
from the Funds Transfer Service therefore it cannot be added at this
time. For information relating to this account, please contact a Bank
of America customer service representative.

Has anyone successfully wired mtgox money from the US recently?
Or is mtgox dying out, and if so what exchange is better?

You may want to try CampBX (https://CampBX.com/register.php?r=2D63QDP2hvq). They're smaller than Mt. Gox, but they're also not dealing with the same regulatory hassles right now, and they seem better positioned to deal with that stuff if it comes up.

If you really want to trade on Mt. Gox, you can always buy Bitcoins on another exchange, or buy them through a service like Coinbase (https://coinbase.com/?r=51a3da5d5580814088000015) or BitInstant (https://www.bitinstant.com), and then transfer them to your Mt. Gox account.

Coinbase allows you to purchase Bitcoins by directly linking a bank account, very much like linking a bank account to PayPal.

BitInstant allows you to buy Bitcoins by printing an order and taking it to a local store (WalMart's the most common one in the US) where you pay cash for your Bitcoins.

I still do a lot of my trading on Mt. Gox. I feel pretty safe with it, given that I can move my BTC to another wallet or exchange at any time.
