You may want to try CampBX (
https://CampBX.com/register.php?r=2D63QDP2hvq). They're smaller than Mt. Gox, but they're also not dealing with the same regulatory hassles right now, and they seem better positioned to deal with that stuff if it comes up.
If you really want to trade on Mt. Gox, you can always buy Bitcoins on another exchange, or buy them through a service like Coinbase (
https://coinbase.com/?r=51a3da5d5580814088000015) or BitInstant (
https://www.bitinstant.com), and then transfer them to your Mt. Gox account.
Coinbase allows you to purchase Bitcoins by directly linking a bank account, very much like linking a bank account to PayPal.
BitInstant allows you to buy Bitcoins by printing an order and taking it to a local store (WalMart's the most common one in the US) where you pay cash for your Bitcoins.
I still do a lot of my trading on Mt. Gox. I feel pretty safe with it, given that I can move my BTC to another wallet or exchange at any time.
