protocol crypto more chance to survive long term?

for those of you listening to Unchained podcast, Laura Shin mentioned she believes protocol layer tokens have more chance to survive in the long run (to my knowledge that refers to eth, eos, tezos and similar - those providing basis for infrastructure) as opposed to app layer tokens.
what are your thoughts on this one? well grounded observation? which protocol crypto do you think has the best position as long term investment in this respect?
