I'd rather choose GPU's. As they are effective and can be tweaked. Also they are less expensive than to a dedicated hardware miner.
Less expensive? Lol ... NO ... I have four 6gpu mining rigs, but none were less expensive to build than buying a S9 asic. Actually, the cheapest six gpu 1070ti rig that I've built was over 1K USD more expensive to build than buying a S9 asic.
I think what people need to compare is the power usage vs. Daily mining rewards. I think when we look at it that way, you find gpu mining specific algo's is more profitable on a daily basis than an asic. But Asics are kind of set it and forget it, where gpu mining takes some fine tuning of each card to get max results.
They each have their pros and cons. Asics wise, I think the l3+ is fairly cost effective, but I bet we see the next upgrade to it within 4 months. Something faster and more efficient. Maybe a 14nm chip.....
