Bitcoin 0.3.20 Mac OS X 10.6.8 11DbException Db::exists: Too many open files

I generated a new address and got the following error message:
11DbException Db::exists: Too many open files

The debug log has 84676 copies of the following message:
socket error accept failed: 24

~/Library/Application Support/Bitcoin/ is a symbolic link to
/Volumes/rRrrichard/Bitcoin
which is a folder in an already mounted encrypted sparse bundle.

I fear that the number of coins lost will soon exceed the number that can be generated.

To clarify: I have not yet lost my 2.05 coins :-)
but Bitcoin is crashing:
