All the manufacturers are on 28nm at this point.  When do people think that the next generation will come out and how efficient do you think it will be?  I am thinking about buying a CoinTerra or HashFast rig because I think that the network difficulty rate will slow down after March when ASICminer, Butterfly Labs, Cointerra, KNC miner, HashFast, BlackArrow, and Biteminer have all released their 2nd generation ASICs, but I don't know how long I would have until the 3rd generation came out.  Thoughts?

I believe KnC was talking about releasing their next gen ASIC in March/April. Also, they'll apparently be jumping a node size:

I am not too optimistic that difficulty will see much of a slowdown until the most efficient miners in the network are scraping out a modest monthly profit - and if that means 16nm? ...well, certainly that's far above and beyond 10 billion difficulty.

Take for example; KnC's October shipment was the equivalent of ~300 million. Their November shipment should incur a jump of over 400 million. When HF and Cointerra come online; I think EACH could be responsible for 400-500 million in a fairly sustained production cycle.

This is the most we know about any 4th gen ASIC:

[HashFast] is already well into development for its second-generation chip, which uses a FinFet design. FinFet uses 3D structures, in which the microscopic transistors on the chip rise above the planar substrate on the chip. This gives them more volume than a traditional transistor gate, which enables them to conduct electricity more effectively, reducing the necessary voltage and increasing switching performance. The result is a faster, lower-power chip.

“It’s the most aggressive design available in our time schedules,” said Barber, who believes he’ll be taping out this chip in the fourth quarter. He wouldn’t say what process node the design used, but CoinDesk notes that last year, TSMC announced plans for a 16 nm FinFet capability in early 2014.

It is going to take years, and by the time difficulty already hit the roof..

I think 2nd generation is already very efficient, 3rd generation will only be a little bit better..

probably 1-2 years.. each time a new generation come out the older generation tend to be almost useless Sad

One to four years. But by that time, the difficulty wouldnt make it profitable for miners to mine.

Not really, 1-4 years from now the mining rig would be so cheap and so fast that will kill off every older generation ASIC...

I believe 2nd generation should be the last generation cause the difficulty could be so high that the 3rd generation ASIC would not make any profit...
