Ripple currency (XRP), unlike BTC, *do* have a central system that hands them out. The company plans on making their money by always having 25% of the XRP in their posession. So as the value of XRP increases, they will be worth more money. Ripples are more of a protocol though - anyone can create a gateway to get into the ripple network - and the more gateways the easier it is for people to exchange money around the world.

If the ripple protocol takes off, then yes, XRP will be worth something someday. But I believe that they'll need tens of millions of users before they become valuable.
