Any way for noob to verify seller of equipment

Just joined forum.  I was looking to purchase some items on the computer hardware forum.  There are a lot of scam warnings!  Is there any way to verify who is legit and who is not?  The escrow account seems to be the recommended way to pay, but there are also a lot of pro and con comments about it.  Are there any updated lists of recomended escrow holders?
