New to Bitcoin? Be careful!

If you use a Blockchain.info wallet and opt not to use an email address, be sure to write down your identifier. I failed to do so and lost .78 bitcoin. From what I've read on here though from Piuk, it sounds like I may be able to recover those coins because I have the password and the time/date the wallet was created...? Anyone else have an experience like this?

just out of curiosity (haven't looked at blockchain.info's offerings FWIW) how were you expecting to interact with your wallet if you dont have some kind of unique ID associated with it (usually this is your email address)?

IMHO, internet based wallets are a loss waiting to happen, why not just keep your wallet in a cryptainer (a lá truecrypt) on a flash drive that never leaves your person?

The blockchain.info wallet is safe as long as you use a very strong password and remember the identifier.  All cryptographic operations are performed in your browser, not on the server, so your password never leaves the browser.  All they keep is the encrypted version of the wallet and have no way of getting your BTC since they do not have the password and never even get to see it.  Using the browser plugin is even safer.

@keastes I had used a blockchain.info wallet once before, and only entered a password. When I went back to the website all I had to was enter that password again. I didn't realize that the identifier was being stored and automatically filled in by my browser. So I thought all I needed was the password. I wrote down that and the BTC address.

Yeah I don't trust online wallets. Sites get compromised. I rather lose my BTC on my own terms.
