Devcoin is excruciatingly slow at downloading the blockchain. Is there any way of speeding this up, or a faster way to gain access to the blockchain?

Yes: completing the "mergecoin" project so all the merged mined coins, not just devcoin, can update to latest bitcoin code, which uses leveldb and is much faster at the blockchain download.

All the merged mined coins are in need of that update but I guess between them all they have not yet piled up enough of a bounty to fget anyone familiar with the leveldb versions of bitcoin and with the merged mining stuff to finish applying the patches. I started applying them a while back and applied the easy parts I was already familiar with from having applied the same patch to older versions to make coins merged mine able in the first place but then bitcoin had some new important vulnerability fix too so possibly it might be better to start again with an even newer version of bitcoin depending on how much stuff has already changed in bitcoin since I began the "mergecoin" project.
