Hi,
Back in 2012/2013 I downloaded Bitcoin-qt on my MacBook and purchased several bitcoins on coinbase. I moved them to my bitcoin qt wallet but a few months later my computer ended up totally crashing in late 2013. Apple performed a factory reset and I assumed that I lost everything that had previously been saved down and moved on.
With the recent price upswing, I tried to run EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard software on my Mac and found my old wallet.dat file. I recovered it and now it is much larger (438 KB). When I re-downloaded the bitcoin core application and put the recovered wallet into the folder and run it with the -rescan code, I receive this error: "wallet.dat corrupt, salvage failed"
I don't believe that there was ever a passcode on my 2012 wallet.dat file as I never copied it or moved it from the bitcoin folder in the application support folder on my old mac that it was in when I downloaded bitcoin core in 2012.
I have tried to run pywallet yesterday but it is asking for wallet passcodes to try and recover the private keys and I don't think there was a passcode (I tried all of the possible passcodes I would have used in 2012 and have not been able to recover anything).
I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what to do next. If I am able to recover the bitcoins on this wallet I will definitely tip for your assistance. This is not my area of expertise so try and use layman terms.
Thank you.
