How does one go about setting up a little pool for their Local Area Network?

It wouldn't be beneficial, I don't think... and it will be a lot of work for no benefit.

You will also need to set-up the back-end for a server... using bitcoind and a dedicated server most likley...

JSYK you can run bitcoin-qt with the -server option and point your miners there without setting up a pool.

I've been doing -server for a while with a separate wallet on each machine.  Not what I'm looking for, though if I'm able to point them all to a single wallet on the main machine that might be suitable for now.

Took me forever to figure this so I thought I would save you the trouble; you need to add rpcallowip="ip of other miners" (asterisks are allowed) to your bitcoin.conf file.  You can use one for each miner or catch them all with an asterisk.
