Is there any effective way to protect an unreleased altcoin name other than going live and obtaining the relevant domain name? If there is dispute, then there just is dispute?

Short answer is: No.

Long answer is: This is the wild west of decentralized financial systems that are being born.

Just go suck up every iteration of your coin idea's name on Github. Won't stop everyone from trying though. BTW, if you want it, I've got github.com/republicoin Cheesy

You may be able to register your unique coin name as a trademark, but it could be costly and take some time.

In the USA you can register as an "intent to use" according to http://www.uspto.gov/trademarks/basics/Basis.jsp

Not sure if the same applies if you're in the UK https://www.gov.uk/register-a-trademark

Just go suck up every iteration of your coin idea's name on Github.
That's the best one, although revealing the names before technical progress has its risks.

I was mostly seeking confirmation to my thinking that there is no special hidden trick that can be used in the coin's core engine (daemon, wallet, miners, pools) to serve any of that purpose. Confirmation attained.
