川普颁发“2017假新闻奖”，这一举动引来广泛的批评，包括来自他自己的阵营共和党的批评。亚利桑那州另一名共和党参议员杰夫·弗莱克（Jeff Flake）周三称川普对媒体的处理方式“可耻且令人反感”。杰夫·弗莱克说：“当一个当权者称所有不配合他的媒体都是“假新闻”时，可疑的应该是那个当权者，而不是媒体。”杰夫·弗莱克说：“人民的敌人，美国总统2017年就是用这个词来称呼自由媒体的。总统先生，斯大林也是用这些词来形容他的敌人的，当我们的总统用了和斯大林同样的词的时候，这显示，我们的民主处于怎样的状况。专制是人民的敌人，自由媒体是专制的敌人。”
