Single GPU mining in 2018 with free electricity - worth it?

I live on a Navy base and I don't pay for my electricity.  I have a gaming rig with a single GTX 1070 in it and I can manage around 30-31mh/s.  I leave it on at night when I'm asleep and when I go to work throughout the day.  I'll be leaving it running while I go out to sea for days/weeks at a time.  When I go out on deployment for months, I'll definitely have it running. 

Is there any downside to mining like this when I essentially have no electricity fees?

Thanks, I was also wondering whether to keep mining ETH or maybe do something else.  I read about Nice Hash and maybe I should do that?  I'm not sure.

Yeah it is go for it. Since you will have no cost on electricity then mining will be beneficial for you. I suggest stick to ETH since the price of it is still increasing. Have other options when you have upgraded your mining set-up.

Only downside is it will generate heat.
 
Also does the Navy care? Have you combed through the acceptable use policies?

I guess my taxes are paying for you to mine, but I thank you for your service and its the least I can do for you in return.

Only downside is that the minute you leave it might crash and will remain that way until you restart the computer.

Depending on the reason why you are on a base, you may want to check on the use policy for both electricity and internet (if you're not using a private provider). Military conduct code is not something to mess around with. If you are not enlisted and won't be violating code then just buy a wifi switch that can reboot the PC remotely.

I lost money in Nicehash and lost confidence. I applaud them getting backing and building a roadmap to repayment...but until my balance is returned, I'm not using them. I now mine directly from miningpoolhub using awesomeminer. I have awesomeminer set to autoswitch between 4 equihash coins = ZCL, ZEC, BTG, ZEN. I have setup offline wallets for each and have it set to trigger automatic transfers to the wallets. What I like about MPH is that you can setup autotransfer ever 0.01 mined which is super nice for making sure your money is safely deposited in your wallet. I have mine set at my hashrate to sweep to the wallet roughly 4x a day. Sometimes the autoswitching leaves some fractions in the different balances, but I never have more than 1 days worth of coins on the pool this way. Ive found it to be a pretty effective setup compared to nicehash that took forever to reach payout, especially when autoswitching.

I have the $170 version of awesomemineer because I manage several rigs, but if you are using windows and only manage one rig or 2 miners per rig (nvidia/amd or GPU/CPU/ASIC) even the free one is powerful enough to setup autoswitching between pools, mining software, and such on the fly.

This can all be remedied if using using windows 10 x64
-set bios to restart on power loss
-set batch files to launch miners
-set windows startup to launch miner batch files
-set watchdog to restart miner on lockup failure
-set failover pools in miner
-if windows locks up, it soft crashes and reboots starting the process over automatically

I now use an even easier process, I run awesomeminer in windows, set it to autostart in tray, set each miner to autostart, set failover pools, set multiple mining software for profit mining, set watchdog to try 3x then failover....works like a charm if something fails.

No real downside at all.  Although you may be more profitable using your NVIDIA card to mine something on equihash.  Take a look at Awesome Miner and pair it with MininPoolHub to get paid out in whatever coin you want with much lower fees than NiceHash.
