Hi all,

Bit of a newbie question here I guess, but here goes.

Are there any benefits whatsoever to setting up and running my own p2pool node, and then mining on that node, compared to just pointing my miner to any of the currencies available on p2pool.org?

well, you should have less DOA if you set up a local node.  you might have some orphans if you';re bandwidth starved (generally upstream if youre in the US), though i couldn't imagine it being much worse than p2pool.org (maybe everyone should start charging a fee, i guess it lends some sort of legitimacy).

if you're going to mine on a remote pool, find a better one here http://p2pool-nodes.info/ or here http://p2pool.hostv.pl/

Thanks for the links. I guess if I want to use p2pool I should point my miner at the one from that list with the lowest latency value?

If I operate my own node, will I be able to collect fees from the network? Will I collect fees only from users connected directly to my node? The reason I ask is that a p2p network is only worth something if it has a large number of nodes in it. So there has to be some sort of incentive for node operators to get involved and carry the cost of hosting etc. So what is it? :-)
