peoples, does anyone have any recommendations for a USB wifi adaptor that will work in monitor mode in a linux VM (in virtualbox)
I want to do some wifi monitoring without having to boot into linux.... would be nice if I could just do it from a VM..

I believe the only way to do this is through using a USB wifi card.. as obviously vmware/virtualbox etc can't natively talk to the wifi card, and just picks it up as a eth0 adaptor. If anyone has a solution to this (besides using USB) i'd be interested to hear.

I know its hit and miss with wifi cards and monitor mode so figured I'd ask before I buy one.

Realtek RTL8187 cards is old but does the job perfectly. There are a lot of "special" packeges of them from Asia with increased power and bundled accessories.

And forget about running virtual machines. Boot the Live CD. It is hard and unreliable to get VM to recognize USB WiFi NIC properly.

Exactly, Realtek rtl8187 is good way..
I use Alfa AWUS036NH (2000 mW) that's working perfectly (monitor mode, injection etc.)...
You can buy from Rokland: http://store.rokland.com/products/alfa-awus036nh-802-11n-wireless-n-usb-wi-fi-adapter-2-watt

I've heard good things about Alfa's.

I strongly agree with the live-OS idea. It's kind of nice to start fresh each time. Plus it helps you to learn more imo.

Have fun hacking ^^

Realtek RTL8187 works with airmon-ng fine with Ubuntu.

You won't hack into my Wi-Fi though.  Wink

ALfa's seem like a good choice. Just make sure you verify everything will work 100% before you buy the equipment. Good luck OP.
