Bitcoin heist

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5320477/Bitcoin-heist-Home-Counties-village-Moulsford.html

Top comment - 'How did they know he had a fortune in Bitcoin. Probably couldn't stop talking about it to everyone. Just like Vegans'

In reality he was probably a publicly accessible trader, but how quiet have you kept about what you have? Even if you only have dust, there are many incredibly stupid people out there who because they associate you with the word 'Bitcoin' will stick a pitchfork in your face to get your 0.00001.

I talked about it a fair bit when it was peanuts. I assume many people forgot or have plans for me. I'm heavily tooled up either way.

Keep it shut - or don't keep it shut.  You'd be nuts to keep your private keys of the big money at home.  Those belong in a vault somewhere.  Don't keep the keys where guys with guns can get them.  Simple solution.

I have dust but even then its difficult talking to people about it. If you sound even a little bit like you know shit, people automatically assume that you are one of those early, uber-hacker, adopters with lot of them lying in your normal wallet. They will also assume that you have already multiplied your investment thousand fold and that you are drowning in money.

I think anyone who has publicly acknowledged holding a lot of them must seriously take care of their security like any of the other rich people would do. Well, at least live in a place that is a bit more secure or crowded than the idyllic village they are showing in that picture.

Maybe just keep your passphrase engraved inside a small locked metal box. Put that metal box in a bank vault . (Metal box coz you really can't trust your bank guy not to try a sneak peek).
I am sure people have done crazier things to keep their passphrases secure.

There are millions of visibly rich people who live completely normal lives without having to think about security. I suppose it's the image of infinite gains and the extremely inaccurate idea they they're anonymous.

What is odd about this particular example is the heistiness of it. They could've made 10-20 times more hacking or launching a crappy ICO and there would zero comebacks. Instead they trod firmly into the real world where the piggies take physical threats a lot more seriously.

They must be too stupid for the online route.

[...]

I talked about it a fair bit when it was peanuts. I assume many people forgot or have plans for me. I'm heavily tooled up either way.

I used to talk a lot about Bitcoin when I first got into it. Tried to share my enthusiasm for this new technology I fell in love with. Told people to keep an eye out for this new asset class. Most people either took me for misguided, crazy or a shill.

Nowadays I mostly shut up about it, unless cryptocurrencies enter the conversation. Whenever someone asks how many coins I have -- which rarely happens -- I usually answer with "too few", which still holds true unfortunately. I occasionally help and guide people that approach me because they remember me talking about Bitcoin years prior.

I do see where this whole "not shutting up, just like vegans" trend is coming from though. There's a lot of people that apparently can't stop posting about cryptocurrencies on social media. Talking about crypto seems to have become a trend of sorts.

I will never store the majority of my bitcoins at home. {paper wallets or hardware wallets} The moment when you are known

as the Bitcoin Guy or Bitcoin Gal, you become a target for criminals. Remember, your bitcoins are just as safe as the pain

threshold you have. {Once they start pulling teeth or toe nails, you will give up your private keys.}

1) Put your private keys on a laptop hard drive

2) Securely store the laptop hard drive in a landfill

Problem solved! Wink

The above also happened in the UK. Coincidence? I think not!

Personally, there is no reason to hide it, i only hide what i'm doing and how much i have in cryptos. Maybe it's better way where i live. People and gov here suspect any extra incomprehensible income.

Oh yea, keep your keys in a vault that belongs to someone else like a bank or an institution, don't keep them at home where you live and have everything under control. This way someone can deny you access to your property, the way they denied people in Cyprus access to their money. My home is my castle is what I like to say.

They were aged 18 to 25, dark-skinned and super-fit.

Seems like those poor refugees. War orphans that came to the UK looking for better life Cheesy
