Someone had this idea yesterday: A Bitcoin fork that by design allows no mining or transactions on Shabbat (Saturday).

I believe this has zero practical usage, but it would be a fun idea to experiment with and perhaps even market to religious Jews.

(We originally thought about calling this JewCoin, but this has too much of an antisemitism ring to me, so I prefer KosherCoin)

Hmm, so basically no one may make any purchases or transactions during Saturdays? I understand why you would want to do this from a religious perspective, but that would also be a huge limitation not to use ones wallet during holidays.

Would this be implemented to different time zones too, as the time of Saturday is different in various places in the world?

Well, yeah, religious people impose limitations on themselves all the time.
I'm not a Rabbi, not am I religious ... so I don't know what will be required.
Maybe it should encompass Saturday in all the timezones to be 100% Glat Kosher.

I've never been a practicing Jew (seems like effort), but I really don't see what purpose this would have.  I grew up poor but my friends seemed to always be convinced I had a hidden stash of "JewGold", so maybe call it that.  After holding on to the coin for thirteen years via Proof of Stake, the coins could have a sudden Barmitzvah and mature, thus doubling in value.  And if you don't open your wallet every couple weeks, your wallet will send you messages guilting you about it.

Smiley But seriously...don't do it.

Jews have allways been great with money, why not market it in Israel, except forget the Saturday thing. Shit, if those guys get ahold of it, it could go become valuable. Check out the Protoshares mPoW algo. It seems to have really taken off. Maybe make it so that it can only be CPU mined on high end computers with lots of memory. That way it will be difficult to mine on VPS servers.

I actually put KosherCoin on my project to-do list some months ago. I love the idea :-)

I just joined bitcointalk for this very conversation because I thought I was the first person to think of this coin idea when I created this sub reddit (www.reddit.com/r/KosherCoin) just now, but of course not! You beat me to to it by 5 years!

So how can we make this coin happen?

It does not necessarily have to be a bitcoin fork. Look at how much the crypto world has changed.

There needs to be blockchain in the kosher world. Improving kosher standards with blockchain is brilliant, and necessary!

Are any of you still active and interested?

LOL. But curious, what will we all say if this project works? Jews are very smart and intelligent people, and they can make money from the air. I might also buy some of these coins. The idea is not bad at all.
