INDUSTRY:The $6.6B US tutoring industry is a fragmented and highly localized market comprised of thousands of small players. It has been growing at a 7.3% CAGR for the past five years. Due to an increasingly competitive academic environment, however, growth over the next five years is expected to accelerate, increasing to a CAGR of almost 8%. This means that, by 2022, Gamma School total addressable market (TAM) will be $9.6B.
THE PROBLEM: The problem we want to solve has three parts. It is best understood by looking at market participants. These participants fall into one of two categories:
Students and tutors looking to informally procure or provide tutoring services, and
Tutoring agencies whose business models are built around being middlemen – or matchmakers – between tutors and the students who need them.
Students and tutors – those in the first category – typically connect through informal means. This could be through things like Craigslist, flyers, and local bulletins or through recommendations from family, friends, and school guidance counselors. Though students have some control over finding the perfect tutor (and vice versa), these connections often come down to little more than just chance. This is the first part of the problem.
The second part comes from tutoring agencies – participants in the second category – who have historically ‘ruled the tutoring roost.’ The majority of business is done by small, local agencies who act as matchmakers between the students that come to them and the tutors they hire. These agencies have high overhead and are often run inefficiently, which is the second part of the problem.
Agencies pass these costs onto students by demanding inordinate up-front fees and charging steep hourly rates (which can run anywhere from $200 to $700 in major metropolitan areas). They then go out and find the cheapest tutors possible (agency tutors usually get paid around $20 an hour). As such, agencies enjoy high margins and turn great profits, but at the expense of students and tutors. This system makes tutoring inaccessible to students with lesser financial means and alienates highly-educated, premium-quality tutors who can get paid more elsewhere. This is the third part of the problem.
