SMF - Ignoring certain forums or categories?

I googled SMF instructions to see if there's a way to ignore entire categories, or specific forums.  It is impossible to participate in a time-efficient manner because the number of unread posts since last visit seems to grow exponentially.    Can anyone explain how to do this?  I haven't seen anything in my profile settings to enable this.

It's better if you just use your Watchlist.

You can ignore boards by going to Profile -> Ignore Boards Preferences.
