Is running a node on my laptop actually helpful?

Hi all,

I'm a long-time lurker and a bitcoin enthusiast who would like to contribute any way I can. My question is, if I run bitcoin-qt all the time, am I actually helping the bitcoin network in a meaningful way? Is more people running the client something the network actually needs?
