Get Family OS Technical Preview for: WindowsLinuxMac OS X
Early adopters of Family OS are eligible to claim free FAM via Family Rewards!

Today, we are very proud to announce Family to the world on this legendary forum.

Family is a new sovereign crypto platform. Crypto has done some great things in the financial sphere, but it has failed at everything else. Family will change that.

The current crypto paradigm is too broken to produce viable alternatives for the "Big Tech" Internet platforms we all use. Web 3.0 promised us it would deliver. But in reality it's worse than Web 2.0 in almost every way. It's less secure, less private, less performant, less usable, and despite the mantra of "decentralization" there are more trusted 3rd parties. Web 3.0 doesn't have a few small problems here and there. It's fundamentally broken. It cannot be fixed. A new paradigm is needed and that's what we're doing.

We depart from the broken orthodoxy in a major way at several layers like: consensus, UX model, ledger design and governance. We had to start from zero and reimagine everything about crypto as we know it. We don't depend on any other crypto platforms, infrastructure or even code. Everything from the ledger/blockchain to the app layer has been built from scratch. Our design will likely be controversial - but for all the right reasons. It's simply better.

We wrote a short book explaining the rationale for everything we're doing. "Family. Our future in cyberspace" (https://joinfamily.xyz/book), despite the obvious homage, tries not to talk too much about our project specifically. Even if you couldn't care less about Family the platform, you should read Family the book! The problems we discuss and the discoveries we've made affect everybody in crypto. We foresee that sooner or later, you'll be seeing many projects adopt our model. It's a game changer.

We don't talk all that much about implementation details. But when you understand the ideas, the implementation will become fairly self-evident - the reverse would not have been true.

Some things may be a little confusing and that's understandable. But in about two weeks, a technical preview of Family OS - our client app - will begin rolling out to early adopters. Stay tuned. For now you'll have to put up with the fog of war. EDIT: Family OS technical preview is now available for download

You can already acquire Family Coins - our crypto currency - and Family Names - our unique user identifiers. https://joinfamily.xyz/swap

Main advantages of the Family model:
- high throughput without the usual security tradeoffs
- no fees (for most users) and instant transactions
- rich applications without security downsides of smartcontracts
- fewer potentially malicious trusted 3rd parties in the ecosystem
- no unnecessary fragmentation of the ecosystem, coherent UX model
- leadership/dev continuity ensured at the protocol level
- sustainable financing model
- built for sovereignty, greatest possible resistance to potential external adversaries (immoral governments, tech giants etc)

Basic info about the cryptocurrency component: (SWAP HERE)
 - Name - Family Coins | Ticker - FAM
 - Supply cap - 200,000,000 Family Coins (FAM)
 - Fees - zero fees for most users
 - Confirmation time - virtually instant transactions
 - Starting circulating supply - 50,000,000 FAM
 - 30,000,000 FAM in the early adopter pool (starting price @ $0.05/FAM, final price @ $0.45/FAM, more info in the book book )
 - 20,000,000 FAM will go towards Family Rewards (and misc expenses)
 - The cybercorporation will vest the remaining 150,000,000 over a very long time (explained in the book)
 - Curve: secp256k1 (may support many curves and algos in the future)
 - Family Coins are dual use - they're both a currency and a token of ownership/governance (refer to the book)

Coins from the early adopter pool are available at 3 different lock-up periods: 6 months, 1 year and 2 years. A longer lock-up period gets you a better rate.
You cannot transfer your Coins during that time, but you CAN buy Family Names (and everything else within the ecosystem).
So unless you're big on trading, you should go for the 2y lock-up. The Coins are locked up on-chain. You can swap from 9 different cryptocurrencies.

For convenience we integrate with Ethereum wallets (metamask, wallet-connect etc). But we do not interface with the Ethereum (or any other) blockchain - we use "eth_personal_sign" to sign Family transactions.
Even if you have no ETH, you can simply create an empty account and use it as your Family wallet. Later you can simply export the key and import it to a native Family wallet in Family OS. There's a web wallet in the swap interface too, but web-based wallets are always tricky - you need to be extra careful about not losing the seed phrase.
Note that it absolutely doesn't matter which crypto you're buying with. You can be swapping from BTC but still use the Ethereum wallet for key custody. This also means there's no reason to reuse your main Ethereum account - create a new one for Family, even if you're going to pay for the swap from your main account.

Note that you don't have to buy any Coins to use Family OS and enjoy the Family ecosystem. You may need a Name to use Family Social, but there will be many opportunities to earn some Coins via Family Rewards (will launch along with Family OS).

So please, don't hesitate to join even if you don't have any crypto! We hope to see you on Family Social soon. For the time being you can join our Telegram channel and chat.

Quote
you will not support smart contracts?

We're definitely against Ethereum-style everything-is-a-smart-contract approach. We're not strictly against the idea and we may as well be positioned to out-compete others on technical merits in this area too. But yeah, it's just not obvious there is much actual utility for average users. Things people REALLY need shouldn't be a smart contract in the first place - they should get first class treatment on the Family Ledger. Things people don't need - well we don't need those. So there's only this awkward long tail of things SOME people kind of sort of want. Then there are many things that are strictly net negatives - scams, questionable tokens, glorified casinos and the likes. There's a trade-off there. May as well do more harm.

That said, we do have plans for limited extensibility that is NOT based on smart contracts. We're working on something that will integrate nicely into Family OS, without the security and usability nightmare.

Quote
how can apps work then?

What we mean by "first class" is that features get implemenet directly as core ledger transaction types. Most (all?) cryptos usually have one transaction type and generalize it to do different things. We have different transaction types that do different things.

Quote
rewards is an airdrop yes?

You could call it that. But it's more of an ongoing thing, not a one-off like airdrops.

How is the ownership of this corporation enforced via the cryptocurrency?
If I'm understanding correctly clients will only sync the corporation chain but not the main chain? Will it be possible to sync with all chains?
Is the mainnet ready?

How is the ownership of this corporation enforced via the cryptocurrency?

By having all the infrastructure be self-contained the enforcement problem essentially solves itself.
The problem most projects have is there's too much external infrastructure that defines de facto ownership irrespective of governance rules. Rules may say that group A stops controlling the project and now group B is in charge, yet group A may still have real control over the project.

Of course, we do have a website and a telegram group today, but both will be gradually obsoleted as people get Family OS (launching very soon!).

Quote
If I'm understanding correctly clients will only sync the corporation chain but not the main chain? Will it be possible to sync with all chains?

That's how most clients will operate - yes.
It will absolutely be possible to do a full sync, but we all know most won't and can't do that. Many projects seem to be in denial and base their security assumptions on everybody running a full node. For example, in Ethereum everybody just blindly trusts Infura - that's the real model. We need maximum security under real conditions. Everything has been designed from the ground up with the assumption that people will be running minimal clients.

Quote
Is the mainnet ready?

Yes, the swap and ledger explorer interfaces already interact with the "mainnet" (there is no public testnet) and so will Family OS when it launches.

Zero fees for most users? And how much for the remaining ones? Can you elaborate on that part!

Because of the way we handle writes to the ledger, the strictly technical cost of writes is essentially zero and we don't have to offer uniform fees per user.
Up to some reasonable threshold of usage most users won't have to pay anything. After that fees should basically stop spam and price in other externalities (growth of the ledger etc). So best case zero fees, worst case roughly as cheap as the cheapest blockchains [with real adoption] (see: the price floor problem in the book).

Family OS Technical Preview has been released!

You can get it for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X.

Early adopters of Family OS can claim free Family Coins in Rewards just for being early. You should be able to get enough FAM to get a Name and start using Family Social for free.

Hope to see you on Family Social!

You can now get Family. Our Future in Cyberspace from Amazon. Of course, the book remains available for free on our website. Regardless of the format, we encourage everybody to read it.

Also, we've seen a number of people who apparently got the Family OS install bonus but forgot, or didn't understand how, to cash out to FAM and get a Name. Once you receive "FAMR" in Rewards, you have to press "withdraw" which lets you convert your FAMR to real FAM (Family Coins). Once you have FAM you can get a Family Name. Also note that FAM being locked (6M, 1Y or 2Y) doesn't affect your ability to buy a Family Name at all. Locked FAM can be spent on Names just fine. We know this can be a little confusing and are working on making the process easier. If you're having issues, just send a message to @help on Family or ask in our telegram group.

Again, hope to see you on Family Social!

I downloaded this Family OS and I get "you're ineligible for claiming the install bonus" when I try to claim it in the rewards page. What should I do to be eligible?

There aren't any criteria for the install bonus. Everybody's eligible (for now, may change in the near future). For whatever reason the system seems to think you already received one. First, please double check that you in fact haven't received the bonus. Chances are you actually got the FAMR and this is a simple UI glitch that lets you try to activate the task twice. If you're positive that you didn't get the FAMR, please send a message to @help via the Family Messenger and we'll fix this for you.
