Litecoin is an Alternate cryptocurrencie like Bitcoin but without such a big market as Bitcoin. It's the second largest one.
Their are still speculations about it, but many think that Btc can grow big, and then Litecoin can be used for smaller transactions like 1$ or so. Because else, Bitcoin is going to be like 0.0000001 for a dollar. To make it more easy they will say .... Litecoins.
