It’s funny you should ask that, as I experienced that very pickle last night when my husband and I were going to see The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Usually, arriving at the theater a half an hour early is more than enough time to get a good seat at our local theater, especially if it’s a later showing. We were seeing the film at eleven at night, and there were numerous other showings earlier that evening, so we figured getting to the theater by 10:30 p.m. would be more than enough time to get a decent seat. Apparently not. We arrived as a massive line of people were filing into the theater, and when we finally made our way in, we found that there weren’t any two-seat options in the upper rows of the theater. The first two rows down in front were mostly empty, but the upper rows were packed, with a few single seats scattered about. Here were our options.

It’s more of a gray area if the lights have dimmed and the previews have started, but if the lights are out and the movie’s playing, do not engage. That total is hardly going to turn any heads, but for a third time at bat, that’s actually pretty damn good. Combined with gigantic foreign grosses, that’s more than enough to call the film an unqualified success and should be more than enough to position the franchise for another sequel within the next several years.

The film, made on a modest seventeen million dollar budget, is expected to gross an additional thirteen million or so this weekend. If so, that will take its domestic total past fifty million dollars with every reason to think the money train will continue rolling for at least a few more weekends afterwards too.

His newest comedy won’t even come close to breaking ten million this weekend, and Free Birds seems poised to continue its meh-ness. If all goes well, it’ll narrowly break five million. We are meeting at the Savannah Film Festival in coastal Georgia, where Payne’s Nebraska has been selected as the fest’s Opening Night Gala film. And in this particular situation, I haven’t yet seen Payne’s latest endeavor, the black-and-white/father-son/road-trip meander starring Bruce Dern and Will Forte.

"Then why are we talking now?" he asks, with sincere curiosity. Great question. Thankfully, when you are sitting across from a filmmaker as diverse and accomplished as Payne, it’s easy to dance through other interesting topics – or, at least, topics you hope that he will find interesting.

When asked about how differently Nebraska might have been had he worked on it years ago – when he first concocted the idea of the story in his head, he waves off the notion. "I feel like a politician. ‘Sir, I don’t deal in a world of could-have-beens or might-have-beens! I deal with what is,’" he says with a laugh. "I don’t know. Maybe it would have been better?"
Watch Free Birds Online That would be difficult. Nebraska continues Payne’s impressive streak of being able to burrow beneath the surface of recognizable characters and explore what makes them tick. The barren, harsh landscapes of Montana and Nebraska are a stark contrast to the lush Hawaiian backdrops of Payne’s last film, the Oscar-winning drama The Descendants. And yet, as he did in that, Payne is able to pull genuine human emotions out of abnormal situations, putting his characters – and, by extension, us – in exaggerated scenarios that honestly seem like they could be waiting for us right around any corner.

The veteran character actor wears decades of baggage on his slumped shoulders and weathered face – often locked into a vacant stare – as Nebraska trudges along. In the story, Woody foolishly believes that he’s won $1 million in a Publisher’s Clearinghouse-type mail scam. He’s adamant about venturing to Nebraska to claim his prize, even if it means he has to walk there. Realizing he won’t be able to talk Woody out of it, the old man’s son (Forte) agrees to a weekend road trip, which reveals more about the two men than any of us could have expected.

Thanks to good reviews, good buzz and very popular source material, we’ve known the film would be a pretty huge hit for awhile now, but still, there’s nothing quite like actually seeing the money roll in to ease any remaining nerves.
More accurate estimations will emerge tomorrow, but for the time being, rough totals predict Catching Fire will bring home between one hundred and fifty and one hundred and fifty-five million dollars this weekend. That’s about what round one opened to back in 2012, and to shade it in a better light, it should place it as the highest grossing weekend ever in November. It will also be more than ten times greater than Thor: The Dark World, which seems poised to finish in second this weekend, as per Deadline.
