Hi, I'm a newcomer that only began taking on an interest in BTC in the past few weeks when it made some big jumps and was featured in a senate hearing.

While Bitcoin is obviously making moves, I'm also interested in the alt-cryptocurrencies as I can totally see them making gains on the coattails of Bitcoin's success as BTC moves more into the mainstream. I've followed some of the bigger altcoins such as Litecoin, Novacoin, and Namecoin, and just wanted to know, what exactly determines the success of an alt-cryptocurrency? A lot of the time I just hear people saying they are all just clones of BTC with little or no features that make them special, and that they're often just pump and dump schemes or premined at early difficulties giving the founders/early adopters massive unfair advantages..

I'd just like to know what separates the legit alt-coins from the bogus ones. Thanks for your time and I hope to learn a lot from being on these forums!

Im not fan of altcoins,  but the longer the altcoins is operating normally (relative stable or increasing difficulty) the less likely it is just pump and dump scheme. But you can never be sure, merchants are not accepting these coins for a reason

This is true although some are more interesting than others. Apart of litecoin which is the best one for speculation and mining i think some notable ones are ppc and primecoin.
