Poll
Question: Why are you generating BitCoins?
I'm not.
I like the idea and want to support the project. I generate bitcoins to help the bitcoin community grow.
I'm planning on using them to buy stuff online.
I'm planning on exchanging them for other currencies.
I'm planning on saving them as an investment.
I'm planning on saving them and also to buy bitcoins for dollars as an investment.

Are you generating bitcoins, and if so then why do you see it as profitable?

(Unfortunately it's not possible to create multiple choice polls. Choose your top reason.)

Anonymous transferring of currency to other parties is a critical requirement of privacy. Additionally, the controlled inflation of Bitcoins is a trait that I find agreeable. Lastly, since Bitcoin doesn't have a central authority, it does not revolve around a parasitic entity.

I lend my resources to the network to help support its growth, in the hope that one day it will grow into a viable alternative to existing monetary systems, and thus promote the privacy of networked individuals.

Bitcoins have very interesting attributes and I think it would be cool if they were to eventually stabilize enough to become an internationally recognized and traded currency. I don't like that the amount of bitcoins being generated halves every four years, but I figure that if bitcoins become popular then someone will branch the code and create other currencies that are based on the same principles but have different characteristics.

Fragmentation of the Bitcoin idea should be encouraged. It would only increase privacy and make such systems harder to shut down. Smiley

Old thread bump...

I'm interested in how attitudes might have changed over the past few years, are we still all about creating a new idealistic global currency with privacy benefits or have we (de?)evolved into closet investors only interested in biding their time and hoping for the value of Bitcoin to rise?

Thoughts people?

When I created the poll I voted for the last alternative, this is still valid for me, but over the years I have gotten more interested in the potential benefits for the rest of the world than I was back then.

Was surprised that many have voted that they are not generating. So are they speculating or something else?

Note that the poll is from January 2010, bitcoin didn't yet have an exchange rate, some weren't even sure the system would work etc. Mining/generating made your computer slow, so getting only a few blocks every day wasn't really worth it for some.
Fun fact is that I used term "generating" since "mining" wasn't invented yet :p

In another 4 years people might see your post and say "wow, I wish I knew about bitcoin back in 2013".

it is still early. one way to look at it is the type of people who are making investments: venture capitalist and early adopters.

another is look at how polarized it is at the moment. there's no consensus. which is good. consensus is the opposite of opportunity.

Bitcoin is the single most important project on the Internet right now.  Its the creation of an economy that is independent of state controls.  This is the most exciting social experiment of the century and none of us has any idea how it will work out.
