I'm traveling in Argentina and I need to sell some bitcoin.  I have to set up two factor authorization to get access to the bitcoin I have on coinbase.com.  The way they do it is by sending you a text message on your phone with a code to type in.
I brought my cell phone with me but my service provider doesn't do international roaming, so I can't use my U.S. telephone number to set up 2 factor authorization.  I bought a prepaid sim card with an Argentinian phone number, but I'm not going to try to use a telephone number with a foreign country code to set up authorization unless I know it's going to work (I just now sent a question to coinbase asking if I can do that).
I do not have a google voice number, and it's not possible to sign up for one from outside the U.S.
I thought about getting a skype telephone number, just for this.  On skype you can't receive text messages, but I think there is a way to do the authorization without using text.  A recording or something.
So it's kind of complicated and a PITA.  I was just wondering if anybody knows a better way.
Edit:  It occurs to me that using a vpn, like the one at my old university, which I still can use, would make it look like my IP adress is in the U.S., and get a google voice number that way.  Worth a try...

I hit a roadblock.  The vpn trick worked, but I still can't get a google voice number, because google voice is asking me to verify my phone number and I can't use my phone.
Edit:  Finally, I bought a skype number with a US area code.  Got the "phone" verified at coinbase and can now make transactions.  For people without text messaging, coinbase offers an option to receive your code by way of a regular voice call.  I used that option, because one cannot receive texts thru skype (stupid).
