For many months, the militants in Syria and Iraq were able to grow in power partly by using the border region of a NATO member – Turkey -- as a strategically vital supply route and entry point to wage war.

Turkey is still supporting the Islamists in Syria, as the president (Recep Tayyip Erdoğan) is a staunch Islamist. But since there is strong pressure from the US and the other NATO members, he is not able to show that support publicly.
