OK, so here goes my first post...

I'm setting up a new mining rig...I plan on mining Litecoins.

Here's the deal...I get free electricity and want to take advantage of it however, I realized (a little to late) that the sound of the GPUs are akin to an F-35 in my 3 bedroom townhouse. My wife would have puppes...even if I did ROI mining LTC or other Alt Coins (I'm $3K all-in BTW)...so I dropped a grand on watercooling.

Oh yeah, did I mention I live in south central Asia...it gets to be about 43C(110F) in the summer...right now it's 28C/11C (hi/low) cause it's winter.

So I found that my pantry which is 68 Sqf (6.3 Sqm) might be the only place to put this thing. I can see I have a 16Amp circuit with it's own breaker above it...I'm no electrician though so I'm reading the 16 off the label above the switch.

There is a 1000W water distiller in this room and a full size GE freezer, always on. There is a bathroom grade exhaust fan up high in the corner venting directly outside (it's hooded for rain) but it gets really hot in there (haven't measured yet) when the distiller is doing it's thing...then it gets to be alright. The door to the room has louvres (2 sets top and bottom) and we run A/C all year...again I don't pay the bill, my employer does and I don't want to call attention to this setup...just in case...I wouldn't lose my job though...very "secure"  Wink.

So...I want to run this new rig 24/7...I will add a 1250 APC UPS (we are 220v/50Hz BTW).

Here are the specs...trust me I know the WC is overkill...I had extra cash and wanted to tinker...

  • 3 x Sapphire 21227-00-50G Radeon R9 290 4GB DDR5 BattleField 4 Edition
  • ASRock MB-970EX4 Socket AM3+/ AMD 970/ AMD Quad CrossFireX& nVidia SLI/ SATA3&USB3.0/ A&GbE/ ATX Motherboard
  • AMD Sempron 145 (cheapo)
  • G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Ram
  • BTC_TechStation_XLBTC Mining Station (XL-ATX) (open air shelf)
  • Seasonic SS-1050XM 1050W 80PLUS Active PFC Modular Cable ATX PSU
  • Etekcity High Power 802.11 B/N/G 300M USB Wireless 1000mw Wifi Network Adapter with Dual Antenna

Will boot Linux off USB stick, no HDD...all GPUs and CPU are watercooled with EK full waterblocks and Swiftech Apogee Drive II combo CPU waterblock and pump. The Radiator has 20FPI/4 120mmx25 fans. I think I can place it in front of the existing fan with plenty of space since there is a large shelf there and can reach power ok...

...oh yeah...I also have a secure brick storage room (about same size...little larger), steel shelves with no A/C, same fan but direct airflow into the room via louvres in door from outside so dust/humidity would be primary concerns...maybe could seal it somehow.

So the question is, short of putting an A/C unit in the room or using crazy big floor fans in the doorway, what can I do if this thing runs too hot?

Thanks all...don't beat me up too much...just a n00b here  Grin.

Hello brother. I am curious to see how it turns out as I am setting up a similar rig. My first time also. I chose the go big or go home route.

I am using those 7 of those same model of card powered by two PSUs (2350 watt total, hopefully enough, going to undervolt), a variety of adapters and risers to make this all work. Risers will all be powered but I am also using unpowered risers to daisy chain and reach the cards as I ordered an open rig which spaces the cards far apart and some can end up quite a length from the mobo. I am having a hard time finding much info regarding how well this exact model of card does with mining, but I suspect it is similar to the 40G model or a bit better. I won't be water cooling as I have an entire standalone garage to dedicate to it. I am planning on using an inline fan to exhaust or intake air directed toward the cards depending on the season if necessary as well as a bunch of box fans. I am not too concerned about cooling as the rig I ordered spaces the cards very far apart and this is an empty 2 car garage with no insulation or drywall. It's on its own circuit with nothing else running off it. Perfect spot! Smiley I get cheap electricity ($0.06kWh) where I live so that is a plus. The rest of my rig is pretty much same specs as yours, just different brands.

I also plan to use the BAMT bootable USB. I found a guide on how to update it for the new AMD drivers here: http://rumorscity.com/2013/12/08/amd-display-driver-update-for-r9-290x-on-bamt-litecoin-miner/

I also found this guide for optimizing CGMiner that might be of some use to you: http://forum.give-me-coins.com/index.php?p=/discussion/381/cgminer-hardware-errors-r9-290-sapphire-battlefield-4-edition

Regarding exhaust, take out that bathroom fan and use the duct to install a HIGH CFM inline fan. Installing this would be pretty simple I would imagine as I think that the crummy bathroom fan feeds to a duct already. Just attach a duct hose and run it down into the room and attach the inline, the higher up you can keep the inline the better. Remember you can put the duct on each end of the inline so you can run another hose down to right by your rig. That will exhaust a small pantry NO PROBLEM! Man that's a perfect setup IMO. I gotta cut a hole myself. Sad Use this to determine your needs: http://www.hvacquick.com/howtos/howto_select.php

I don't really see the point in adding the UPS. If the power goes out a UPS will not last more than a couple minutes and the internet will likely already be down so you won't be able to contact your pool. That's a waste of cash that could be put to better use.

I would of dropped the water cooler cash on more video cards, but for a small pantry that would be difficult to cool.

Pick up a kill-a-watt unit for 20 bucks to put in front of your surge. It will display how many watts your rig is pulling. Quite handy.

Make sure to use powered risers if you are using risers, not worth risking damage IMO.

This is running me about 4.5k so far. It's probably more than I should of spent, I know. But what the hell. I want to mine some coin! I should be able to get at least 5500KH/s if I do this right. I designed it to mine litecoin, but the more I look into anoncoin the more I think I should go there. Difficulty is much lower and it has potential and some real value already. Same scrypt hashing.

I likely will not have mine finished for another month or so when I get all the parts from in from international shipping, given the holidays. I am way ancy to get this thing running. Let me know if you encounter any issues that might be heading my way please! Good luck!
