Kristov Atlas did the Darksend code review, you can read about it here : http://blog.anonymousbitcoinbook.com/2014/09/darkcoin-code-review-results/
The issues that came out of that review were addressed in a RC5 update (most issues had to do with our two client pairing on Testnet, on Mainnet that changed to
three client-pairing and also other issues were adressed in that update to make a better anonymization possible).
More information about the update / reply of Dev Team to Kristov Atlas code review here : https://darkcointalk.org/threads/reply-to-kristovs-paper.2325/

Let the cloning commence!

Seriously though, open sourcing the project was needed.

It was kept closed source so that the code couldn't be stolen while they were working on features. Apparently the devs have reached a point where they now feel comfortable releasing the code.
