alt coins ... good or bad for bitcoins?

seems like alt coins are popping up almost everyday.
what sort of impact would this have on bitcoin?

I feel MOST but not all alt coins are just dump coin , not very usefull.

After dilution comes consolidation.  The top 5-10 will all find uses in commerce I have no doubt, besides betting.  It is a good thing.  That is like saying is it good or bad to have all kinds of currency on Earth like YEN,USD,CAN,CHN,EUR, etc.  of course its good.
