Hello, I am currently thinking about buying an AMD gpu to mine bitcoins with. Is it worth it? Can I make a profit? And if not for bitcoins, what about litecoins? I used to mine bitcoins with my hd 7950 about a year ago, but its been so long that I don't really know anymore. Can anyone shed some light?

Litecoins could be profitable on a GPU (As in have been, and might be for a while) but for BTC, that time has passed.

ASIC mining machines such as the KNC Jupiter and upcoming Neptune are just so many orders of magnitude faster than the GPUs for bitcoin that they can no longer compete. Check the link in my signature for a trusted supplier of up to the minute bitcoin mining equipment. The 2nd public Neptune batch is still open but limited. They have also mentioned the possibility of a re-release of their proven Jupiter miner, a 600Gh unit, which would be produced much more rapidly (Typically inside a month) than the still in development Neptune, which is probably more than 2 months away. Anyway, keep an eye on that site for another run of Jupiters, or pre-order the Neptune to be sure of owning some of the best bitcoin equipment around.

@Stopthe_bomb It's a well though-out introduction anyways you should use the "mining" section.

Well, if Stopthe_bomb is in the same boat as me...we're stuck here until we are "trusted" enough to venture out into the mining community and share our wisdom, hopes, and dreams... Smiley So, posting in the mining section is, well, impossible at the moment.

It's 100% not worth mining Bitcoin with a GPU you will use way more power than BTC you generate - it may be profitable for Litecoins however this will depend on a number of factors - you investment price - electric costs etc, do the calculations and you should get your answer.

Is there any mining eq. available in the next weeks? The most hardware is sold out to April or later.

The mining PCI-Express cards shoudl be avail., but the price is very high per MH/s.

Well if there's another batch of Jupiters from KNC announced soon, they may be shipped before the end of January... but we'll have to wait and see.
