I'm considering investing in one of the equity funds here, BTC-EQTY. Since thus far I've only ever invested in securities on the public exchanges (btct.co, etc), what do I need to do before sending my funds to someone privately, to protect myself in case a misunderstanding arises after payment is sent?

You should need to transfer funds through safe and secure firms which are legally approved by government. If you don't then invest money with the proper guidance of some financial management company because they are uses Private Equity fund software for securing your transfers. I know one of the firm that will proper guide you about your investment and also help to get more capital gain from investment.
