Qt Wallet catching up transactions, does it affect bitcoin sending?

Like I said in the tittle my Qt wallet is catching up transactions from few months ago.

I sent some bitcoins.

Will the transfer be effective only after my wallet is up to date?

How long does it take for a transfer to be effective, with no commission reward?

Do you see the transaction on blockchain.info? You can search by sender or receiver address or transaction id. If the transaction shows up then it's like any other transaction meaning it will be "effective" when it's mined into a block i.e. when it gets confirmations.
