I'm not sure if pingit uses smartphones or regular phones also.  Mpesa works using USSD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unstructured_Supplementary_Service_Data) and SMS.  AFAIK USSD basically works on any GSM phone.

If you liked this post buy me a beer.  Beers are quite cheap where I live!

Ah, think you might need a smartphone for PingIt, so that's one draw-back.

Yeah, you do. I have the pingit app as I originally got it to buy my first Bitcoins but backed out and used PP instead. Can people chargeback on Pingit or is it safe?

Not entirely sure, but I found this:

Quote
I've sent a payment to the wrong mobile phone number – what should I do?

Let us know straightaway on 0333 200 1012*. If the money has been paid to someone with a Barclays current account, we’ll try to take the payment out their account and return it to you. If the payment was to someone who holds an account with another bank, we’ll do our best to recall the payment but we can’t guarantee that you’ll get your money back.

Be very careful when entering the details of people you want to send money to ‒ we aren’t responsible if you send it to the wrong person. Each time you make a payment with Barclays Pingit, you’ll see a confirmation page before your payment is sent, so there’s a chance to double-check the details before you confirm.

*Lines are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To maintain a quality service, we may monitor or record phone calls. Barclays.co.uk/callcharges

It'd be good to have some sort of fast payment system for Bitcoin. Like a chip with our wallet address on that we can just swipe at a terminal to initiate a transaction.
