Is there a way to get the client to export a public key and chaincode?

Ideally, this would be in a format similar to the way addresses work.

I guess the long term plan is for deterministic wallets to shift to the standard format anyway?

When you select "Backup Wallet", one of the options is "Export key lists".  You can get everything you want from that.
