Does anyone know if the heat sink / fan manifold are interchangeable between GPU models in the same series?  ie. a MSI 280x heat sink / fan on a sapphire 280x card?

yes but on a case by case basis.  I have swapped hd 7970's around quite a bit.   I think this sapphire dual 280x could switch with this msi

not sure if the heatsink will match up since the ports are not the same.  but if both cards have the same ports  with hd 7970's   then the heatsinks usually clear.
