Problem with Bitcoin-qt

Hi all,
I'm a very newbie in Bitcoin world and I'm learning now how to work with it. I have a little problem with Bitcoin-qt:
I have Debian Wheezy. I friend how mine compiled the Bitcoin-qt on my computer (using qmake I think) and everything worked. Then after an update of the system it suddenly stopped to work saying that libboost lib were missing. I installed them and start to work again. Then I restarted the system and... well... Gnome crashed and I couldn't fix it so I had to format the / and reinstall it   
Now I still have the problem of libboost missing, but I don't want to install them manually 'cause I'm afraid that Gnome crashes again and that I'll have to reinstall everything again.
Any suggestion? I found on google a topic where the user fixed the problem cleaning the project and then compiled all over again and it worked, but I'm a noob also in Linux and I couldn't understand how to do it. Can you please help me?

The compilation is a little tricky, but it can be done. Is libboost on your system? in /var/lib  and type: locate boost
Bitcoin-qt does not depend on gnome (afaik) so this should not be a problem.


Alternatively, you could get a bitcoin-qt binary and run it directly

What makes you think libboost is what cause Gnome to stop working? You say you upgraded the system. That implies you did more than just accidentally uninstall and reinstall libboost. In particular, the upgrade shouldn't have removed libboost in the first place; it's possible other critical packages were removed at the same time.

Just go ahead and install libboost; even if it does hose your system, it's a fresh installation so you won't lose much (except time). In the future, pay attention when upgrading your system, especially if any packages are to be removed. When in doubt, press Cancel.

I have libboost but they're an older version than the one that bitcoin-qt requires. (I have the 1.49, bitcoin-qt requires the 1.55)

How to solve it?

Well, that would depend on what version of ubuntu you're using.  I guess it's not Trusty if it comes with libboost 1.49 installed..

There's 1.55 for saucy, quantal, and precise.

If you're on trusty (maybe saucy and quantal too?), you could just sudo aptitude install libboost1.55-all-dev and libboost1.55-dev, and it'll take care of removing the old version of libboost..  or you could just purge it yourself.

Switch to jessie, upgrade libboost, then switch back to wheezy.
