Worth it to drop money on a GPU rig today?

Like the title asks, is it worth it? I have $3k I can drop on a GPU rig right now and want to know if altcoins are profitable enough to warrant this. Is it a pipe dream at this point or do I still have time to jump on the bandwagon?

I believe most people would not be as profitable anymore unless they have free equipment or free electricity due to the recent fall in the bitcoin price.
