Synthatic data for AI

Could somebody explain importance of ability to generate synthetic data for AI calculations?  How reliable is this data, and is there real shortage of raw data to be used for AI that synthetic data generation is required? I am taking a close look at NTK project right now, and it seems interesting.  Are there any other similar projects?  Thank you.
