Is all of this optimism coming from just one reddit speculative assumption of mtGox resuming withdrawl or am I missing something?

I would be surprised if it's just the reddit post but indeed it seems it is.  How easy it sometimes is too influence the market, especially in moments of panic.

They have pulled a textbook example of how to make people not trust you.

If being old is their only virtue I'll think I'll pass.

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out. I think there is a chance they will shamble along just about functioning for a while yet.

To me (yes, I'm stuck there) there's just no viable alternative to optimism right now. Coin withdrawals haven't been working as we all know, I've been unable to withdraw fiat until after the crash (waiting for bank account confirmation), and since it happened while I was asleep my coins went down in value so far that it doesn't make sense to try and cash out now. Either the gates reopen and I can get them out and recoup my losses or I might as well also lose the remaining few percent - the chance that withdrawals will resume is big enough for that risk, because there'd be (almost) nothing left anyway if they don't.

I will answer your Geology questions! https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=864879
