So I just started yesterday, still trying to get the hang of things.

Ran around guiminer and cudaminer so far.
And tried stuff out with bitcoin and litecoins.

Bitcoins at 140mhash/s
Litecoins at 200khash/s

My first questions (well set of ?) is...... why are they different? Is it just cause of the algorithms? Does that mean Litecoins algorithm takes longer, and thats why the speed is lower?

And other question set is, what is considered or a recommended good speed? (for your average miner  Wink)

I know I am my PC isnt built to go mining (Nvida and intel), but I might want to get more into this and invest or build a mining rig.
I figure it will be a fun experience after I rob a bank save up some money lol.

And I see a lot of people focusing on (how much coins or $ you are making) vs (the charge of power and cost)

But I am hoping on some advice from your average miner on their speeds, cost, or profits.
What you would recommend, on what speeds to aim for VS time spent, cost to buy/build, profit, etc?

Bitcoin is sha256-based, and litecoin is scrypt-based.
Scrypt hashing is memory intensive, and it runs slower.

You can find the hashrate of various hardware here.
Bitcoin (sha256): https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison
Litecoin (scrypt): https://litecoin.info/Mining_hardware_comparison

I won't suggest you to do bitcoin mining, and I am not really sure how the upcoming scrypt ASIC will affect the profitability of GPU mining scrypt-based coins...

What for the scrypt a sics to come out. They will bump the difficulty up a ton but will make a lot as well

Isn't it a myth? I mean scrypt ASICs.

It's not. Prototypes are already being tested by their creators.

Any links proving this? Cause everything I've found is : "Preorder our miner it's going to be a blast." Aaaaaaand nothing.

Scrypt is very well suited for GPUs and on some systems for CPU + very fast memory. While scrypt ASICs might eventually come out I doubt they will be the game changer sha256 ASICs were for Bitcoin. If you are going to come out with a board that handles vector computations and memory very well you might just as well make it a GPU. Another issue is the price. Scrypt is memory intensive and RAM is pretty expensive (especially fast RAM). And even if they do somehow make it, there are other algorithms out there besides scrypt and sha256....

they basically take the power use down a bunch not really increase the speed like sha-256 asics did, yet anyway
