A war has begun between those attempting to control fake news and the fake news providers.

https://futurism.com/social-media-congress-government-regulation/

Quote
"In today’s Congressional hearing, Sandberg said fake news sources and Facebook’s human and algorithmic moderators were locked in an “arms race.”

The problem is the "war" is seemingly impossible to win for the providers because they can't control the creation of fake accounts.

Lawmakers have no idea what to do apart from saying "the wild west of the internet is over."

What do you see as a viable solution?

I think the solution to overcome the creation of fake accounts and so on social media must be tightened again, it is necessary to apply ID data such as kyc, to create accounts on social media so that all published news can be held accountable.

You don't and you can't. Social media was made for users to communicate with their friends and families online and also to discover other people with pretty much the same hobbies you can talk online. This basically makes social media free to everyone, even to those that spread fake news. Controlling them means controlling those people who are actively enjoying social media in itself, so it's not really viable to do it.

Technology has good things and bad. Currently, it is more difficult to control the use of social media. But, regulations are needed. The majority of teenagers are addicted to the social media and sometimes abuse social media which is wrong. If nothing is done, this will be the legacy for generations and generations

There must not be any censure i'd say. And before you tell me that this is what gave MSM so much "power" im the minds of people, i'll tell you that they are pretty much one-sided. Nowadays they shut right-wing (not mentioning extremist right-wingers) platforms down and that lead to what we have here now: very loud and very annoying one-dimensional sources.

Let the market and Bitcoin (blockchain) regulate everything. Watch Roger Ver and John McAfee talk about how it would work. The first 5 minutes are good.

It can't be regulated, which is why people should look to more objective sources for information  (reuters, bloomberg, economist). A completely objective news source, however, does not exist.

This can be a solution to this. An ID would make all accounts in social media be associated to only one person. However, I think we can't now achieve that as a lot of accounts are rising just to provide fake news. So what we can do for now is just to be critical on what we see on social media and be aware that fake news is slowly rising in this platforms.

Educate the population on what is obviously fake news. Like seriously, it starts to be come so obvious after a certain point.

Realistically, it's going to be 50% on the social media companies to draw a hardline on what is considered spam/abuse; and 50% on the population of said platforms to be aware of what is fake news.

At the end of the day, a simple google search will stop anyone believing such nonsense. I wouldn't mind if Facebook added a button saying "60% of people think this isn't real" w/ a button press almost like a poll.

Interesting idea, but wouldn`t it backfire? People are already prone to believe fake news, and now they not only like and repost, but also confirm that the news are true. This kind of a poll may make the situation worse.

Lol, the solution is to not regulate anything.

Those attempting to control fake news ARE the fake news providers. The point is that they just want the monopoly.  Wink

Although this is a good idea, I think that, given the kind of technological age we live in now, it will be harder to regulate social media simply because almost everyone can access the internet very easily... at least for those countries that have internet already. Perhaps AI could be used to sort out fake news from the authentic ones, but at the end of the day it all still depends on the people, whether they believe the fake news or not.

Facebook employs human monitors to keep check of what gets posted or shared, but they’re also developing (or perhaps, already developed) algorithms to do the monitoring too. I think artificial intelligence will be effective in keeping social media clean, do you agree?

We don't need more regulations, we need to enforce the ones already on the books. Start with stripping their safe harbor provision under the DMCA which protects them as a public commons. They have demonstrated very clearly they are curating content, making them publishers. Furthermore these companies fit well within the definition of illegal monopolies. In this way they will be forced to once again become a public commons and remove only illegal content, or content which is in violation of the clearly defined TOS. The other option is to become a publisher and face massive liabilities.

The regulation of social media has been greatly a matter of discourse between everybody else --- and its level of difficulty when it comes to implementation is the main challenge. With how vague the social media is, it seems that it is impossible to regulate social media. It requires a massive plan of action and good foundation in cyber law. We cannot avoid someone who wants to be in social media. However, we may take a step towards putting a limit on it gradually. Since social media is a powerful tool itself in the online world, might as well use it also for the said platform to be safe. Moreover, the issue on rampant fake news today seems to be right now, the reader's responsibility also.
