https://cryptomenow.com/new-research-shows-that-cryptojacking-is-responsible-for-more-than-4-of-moneros-supply/

It's estimated that 4% of Monero's supply came about through malware mining.

Maybe you're making someone rich without even knowing it.

It usually come from unknown program or software, my old laptop always got 100% CPU even it just started. Not sure if that mine monero or not but it comes from pirates program that i download before and my antivirus detect it as mining. So yeah its possible but 4% from supply is pretty insane.

Monero is in the news for all the wrong reason. There is this virus going around mining monero, and also there are ransom demands from a kidnapper in Norway asking to be paid millions in monero. This is becoming a dark coin indeed

That's a big number and maybe true because so many mining software are on monero I am using 3 anti virus and anti malware and always checking those softwares that are running in my computer, these are all so well hidden that you need strong anti virus.

Bitcoin can be used just the same, and that kind of malware is present for any kind of shitcoin, not just XMR.

This is not my first time hearing about a malware/virus that contain program, but what makes me really surprised is that its Monero which all we know as the one of the pioneer of anonymity in cryptocurrency. And 4% is not a small amount though.

Not only malware/virus softwares, but also websites with malware. Sometimes, I noticed that pop-up websites consum alot physical hardware environment. I think it's caused by mining coins.

A regular anti-virus probably isn't going to identify most of these programs. They're likely sophisticated enough to avoid detection or they wouldn't be having much success. I say that because most people do have anti-virus software running at all times yet they've still managed to acquire 4% of coins.

that is the worst title you could have chosen for this topic.
as for the subject at hand, the way they mine Monero is through running mining scripts on websites that you visit. for example ThePiratebay.org used to have this in the background and whoever visited that site were mining for them for the duration of their visit.
it isn't a malware that installs as far as i have seen.

Bitcoin can be used just the same, and that kind of malware is present for any kind of shitcoin, not just XMR.
no it can not because coins like monero are being mined with GPU but bitcoin needs ASICs to be mined efficiently. mining through browsers from people' GPU is not going to get you anything.

malware mining.

One great tool can be Process Explorer. It's made by a company that was bought by Microsoft, so now you can download it from microsoft.
I run in in tray, I see it all the time. It always shows my CPU usage and if the usage goes high for too long I can check what program is guilty for that. Also it's a great replacement for the usual Task Manager.

And indeed, this is not only about Monero.
Monero just happened to be one of the few successful coins where CPU mining still got you somewhere. I don't know if it's still the case and it should be more difficult for the malware makers too with the often changes in the algo (which require new miner too).
But this was attempted for Bitcoin and possibly for other coins too. Bitcoin gone ASIC thus that (old) kind of malware mining is an even bigger waste of energy for nothing.
